"Building the Self-Esteem of Today's Youth for a Better Tomorrow"
"I believe the children are our future /
teach them well and let them lead the way /
show them all the beauty they possess inside /
give them a sense of pride to make it easier /
let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be..."
No words could better articulate the importance of building positive self-worth and pride in our children than this emotional song. For this reason I am sincerely committed to the modern need for self-esteem building in today's youth. As Miss District of Columbia USA, I serve as an activist for mentoring programs that develop positive self-esteem in children throughout the country. In particular, I desire to uplift the spirits of children of all ages who feel that they must meet someone else's standards before they feel happy with themselves inside and out.
Children today need this type of growth and support now more than ever because their actions and decisions are key to the continued growth and support of our country. At this time, peer pressure is stronger than it has ever been, leading children down dangerous avenues that they should not have to face such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, gang violence, premarital sexual intercourse, childbirth at early ages as well as physical, mental and emotional abuse. A strong sense of self worth is vital in helping our children to avoid these dangerous situations and building positive self-esteem is the first step in doing so.
As an activist for positive self-esteem building in children, my overall goal is to develop and shape children's minds in such a manner that they consciously choose to reject what others may feel is the norm, and that they learn to embrace themselves and their unique differences in a positive manner. In doing so, my belief is that these children will grow up to become strong, positive forces which will return to their communities in the DC area to help other children in such a manner.
